Green ICT
Green ICT briefly
Green ICT, or green information and communication technology, refers to the sustainable and environmentally friendly development of digital services through improvements in energy efficiency, recycling, and the use of eco-friendly technologies.
Green ICT aims at resource wise solutions
The goal of Green ICT is to reduce the environmental impact of ICT and promote sustainable development.
ICT accounts for 4–10 % of global energy consumption and 3–5 % of carbon dioxide emissions.*
These numbers are increasing, signaling the seriousness of the issue. Digital development needs to be integrated into companies' corporate responsibility strategies at a practical level.

5 ways to develop digital services sustainably
Green ICT is not rocket science. You can make a positive and measurable impact by considering these five areas. Achieving change requires increasing understanding and a cultural shift where sustainable digital development is acknowledged at both the strategic and operational levels.
Devices and infrastructure
Smart and scalable infrastructure, when used intelligently, can reduce energy waste, costs, and emissions.
Software development
Optimising software speed, architecture, and usability reduces emissions and improves user experience. Avoiding unnecessary work in error detection and troubleshooting also reduces emissions.
Design
Design solutions can influence the types of services built, the amount of data transferred, and the electricity consumed by displays. The better the user experience, the less time is wasted and the fewer emissions are generated.
Service lifecycle
Proper lifecycle management and maintenance can help avoid major overhaul projects or solutions that are difficult to maintain. This saves costs and time, thereby reducing emissions.
Service and its impacts
System thinking and ethics guide decisions on what should be developed in the first place.
The effects of these actions reduce emissions either through decreased utilisation of different devices' capacity or indirectly by reducing people's time usage.
